◼︎ Tropea is a Calabrian town of ancient origins that hosts roughly 6300 souls of the province of Vibo Valentina, even if the population rate is slowly decreasing over the years. The oldest human evidence found in this territory date back to the Neolithic period. Thanks to the excavations of the early twentieth century, carried out following the restoration of the cathedral and then to the excavations of the archaeological superintendency of Calabria, we know of a stable human settlement in the area around the church and that there was a necropolis near the current railway station . This settlement can be placed between the Middle Bronze Age and the first half of the Iron Age

◼︎ Tropea is one of the most beautiful Italian places, as much as all the territory near by. Fascinating atmospheres, gorgeous colors and Mediterranean smells, a melting pot of tribal feelings mixed with a dozen of cultures. ⠀

A GEM FROM THE SOUTH :
◼︎ Opuntia ficus-indica, commonly know as Ficodindia here(Indian fig), is a domesticated species of cactus mostly known for their characteristic thorny look, colorful flowers and beautiful succulent fruits. Despite it’s name the plant is originally from Mexico, but it’s now naturalized here in Calabria since it was introduced in the Italian territory after Christopher Columbus expedition, and kept their name since, even if the plant had nothing to do with India but that’s where Columbus expedition thought to be at the time. We should call them Central America figs to make more sense!

◼︎ Tropea is an incredibly picturesque town in the south of Italy, with a unique atmosphere that resembles the vibe of old Italian movie set, and the classic feel of the warm-hearted souls of the south. A great destination for someone who’s looking for stunning beaches but also real feelings.

POSTCARD FROM TROPEA :
if you get hungry while visiting any place in Italy the Alimentari is always your best choice. It is a delicatessen store, kinda like a bodega in Nyc, where you can find not only a wide range of food and all kinds of every day products, but here they often carry local ingredients & traditional delicacies with a way better quality than supermarkets and at a way better price compared to bars or restaurants. Also known as Pizzicheria, or Norcineria in some regions, is the name of an Alimentari specialized in cured meats & local cheeses. A must go in every new place you’ll visit!

◼︎ Santa Maria dell’Isola is a monastery located on top of a rocky promontory overlooking the breathtaking coast of the Gods, and accessible only by climbing up a set of stairs carved directly into the cliffside. When it was first erected in the Byzantine period, between the sixth and ninth centuries, it belonged to the Basilian monks and from the 11th century onwards the Benedictine monks lived there. Originally it was standing on its own little island, but over the centuries, silt built up and filled in the water between that island and the mainland creating the characteristic local beach that we see today. The building itself was a simple church in medieval times, it was completely redesign during the Renaissance, and then in 1905, an earthquake destroyed its facade, and it was rebuilt again

THE LOCAL SYMBOL :
◼︎ Here you can usually find someone who speak enough English to get essential informations at any stores or businesses near the historic center, but English is not really widespread here and stronger accents usually won’t work, but most of the locals will enjoy the challenge of using their little English trying to help you out. However, trying to speak Italian will give you an extra gear both in the social aspect of it and during any bargaining process, so give it a shot by using your phone or an old school pocket dictionary. It’s worth it!
